Spices: What’s In There? Italian Seasoning

This is N0. 4 in our combination spices series:  Italian Seasoning

Yes, we sometimes need authentic goodness in a hurry.  Those times when we don’t have time to sort through jar after jar, or bag after bag of dried herbs and spices then chop, shred, julienne, etc to get those bursts of deliciousness that can only come from having just the right flavors in our cook pot.  That is exactly why we need pre made combinations.  With Italian spices, we want to be certain that those flavor profiles are especially fresh because otherwise our marinara is only speckled tomato sauce and will disappoint. That is why we make our own!

Italian Seasoning:

  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon dried marjoram
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons dried flat leaf Italian parsley
  • 1  tablespoon dried (granulated) garlic
  • 1  tablespoon dried orange zest

Place the ingredients together in a coffee grinder and pulse/grind quickly together to a coarse texture.  Store airtight until ready to use.

The following recipe is basic. Use it as a suggestion of amounts.  It is the combination we use for bulk preparation for our pantry.  Try adding/subtracting among your favorite herbs from this list until you come up with the exact profile your palate appreciates most.  Some dishes will benefit from the addition of  little extra of one or two of the herbs in this selection.
